About Hampshire Veg Box
We are on a mission to put small-scale sustainable farming back at the heart of the food system we all depend on multiple times a day.
Everything we do is shaped by our values: Community; Kindness; Nourishment; Compassion; Transparency; Resilience; Co-operation.
We have established Hampshire Veg Box to make it simple for local people to buy from wonderful local growers and producers, and for us all to be closer connected to the food we eat.
You can see the “Our Producers” page for more info on where we source our produce, and to find out more about the wonderful growers in the area.
Hampshire Veg Box started as Ooooby Hampshire back in 2020, rebranding recently to show we do exactly “what it says on the tin”. Our team has over 60 years combined experience in growing veg, running veg box schemes, and working in sustainable local food industries.
All of our team at the moment live in or around Winchester, Fair Oak, Eastleigh and the surrounding areas meaning they are actively involved in local activities, campaigns and love local events.
We want the Hampshire Veg Box experience to be a friendly approachable one, so please do get in touch if you have any questions or just want to chat.
WHAT WE BELIEVE IN
Did you know that the average age of an apple on a supermarket shelf is 12 months old?!!? We couldn’t quite believe this either but it is true… Plus studies show that most vegetables lose upwards of 55% of their nutrients within 5 days of them being picked or harvested.
We work hard with local producers and our wholesalers to bring your the freshest of fruit, veg and other produce so that it doesn’t lose its taste, nutrients and isn’t a year old!
We work with organic producers, sustainable growers and regenerative farmers to bring you the most naturally grown produce as we possibly can.
Farming in a way that gives back more than we take out of our natural environments is something that we extremely passionate about, and should be something we all look to support. For our children and grandchildren we need to be taking care of our soils, nature, wildlife and the resources we all need.
Supporting local producers and eating local foods is at the core of our beliefs and helps us to achieve our first two pledges of fresh and natural produce.
It’s simple local food from the producers we work with doesn’t travel as far leading to less carbon emissions, leading to less time to your plate (more nutritious and tasty), and leading to less unnatural preservatives being needed.
Plus supporting local farmers, grower and producers means we can pay them a fair deal for their efforts.
MEET THE TEAM
Chris has loved growing food from the minute he visited his great Aunts farm in Worksop. After a career in marketing and radio, he took this passion to a new level starting Urban Farming in the Southampton area before going all-in on a small scale farm in East Sussex. After 3 years and over 4500 veg boxes grown and delivered, Chris and his wife had a little girl (Clemmie) and decided to move back closer to family in Southampton.
Chris has taken the skills he learnt growing food and put them into an online learning platform teaching people how to grow food called The Food Grower Academy… And takes his knowledge of running veg box schemes, marketing, branding, and retail experience to the Hampshire Veg Box Team… Plus he is looking forward to an exciting return to the Winchester area as he went to school, college and lived here for years.
John has a background in food, from leaving school to becoming a qualified chef, then in the early 90’s setting up a wholefood store and an organic box scheme in Winchester. As the box scheme became more successful John joined a young Riverford business and helped them to grow and become the successful company they are now. From there John joined the Hampshire Veg Box team and has helped us develop quickly in a difficult time across the globe.
When John is not in the kitchen making jams or baking cakes, he can be found on a football pitch at either Winchester City FC or Winchester Youth FC. The football boots have been swapped for a laptop and an admin role helping over 300 kids take part in active sport.
Seb has been involved in the sustainable food movement for 15 years, initially establishing Food Up Front, a social enterprise in London that supported households to grow food in their unused outdoor space. Seb worked for Sustain – the alliance for better food and farming, for 6 years, and is co-founder of the Independent Food Aid Network, a national charity that represents independent food aid providers.
More recently Seb founded the Winchester Food Partnership and was Chair for 2 years. Seb is a 2015 Winston Churchill Fellow and 2016 Clore Social Fellow, and as a resident of Winchester he likes nothing more than a dip in the River Itchen.
He is now working full time on the global IT system that is fundamental in ours and many other veg box companies operations.
Alex is part of produce packing team and is passionate about making sure the produce in your deliveries is of the highest standard.
He has a fantastic range of experience growing up around a produce store and veg delivery business. Then working for Riverford’s Hampshire Veg Box Scheme before it went national.
Paul is one of our delivery team. His local knowledge is second to none, and he is passionate about local food, community and loves chatting to the regulars on his delivery round.
You will see him in and about Hampshire in our new 100% electric sustainable delivery van.
